Ames Construction began as a small regional contractor in Minnesota. More than 60 years later, they’ve grown to become a full-service, heavy civil and industrial general contractor working across the continent.

They’re literally building America, which sometimes requires them to operate in remote areas with little infrastructure. They’ve forged a long-term partnership with Lumen Technologies to standardize and consolidate reliable technology across regions.

“Over the years, things change, and to be able to lean on somebody who is there with you day in and day out is huge for both our business and our customers,” said Bob Bruckner, Chief Information Officer at Ames Construction.

Dedicated internet and strong security

Ames needs to continue growing to stay competitive, and their top priorities include deepening their commitment to top-notch security and earning Path to Cloud and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC).

The first step was to upgrade their existing infrastructure from a legacy VPN and Versa at select sites. Ames turned to Lumen for several solutions:

  • Lumen® Dedicated Internet Access
  • Lumen® Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) Framework
  • Lumen® Next Generation Firewall (NGFW)

These technologies offer Ames a fully secured internal network and a reliable field network to support ongoing and new projects with minimal downtime.

Quote from Bob Bruckner, Chief Information Officer at Ames Construction: If we can’t meet our customers’ requirements, someone else will. Our goal is to be flexible with our technology, be open to what our customers are looking for, and have multiple solutions available to meet those requirements.

A faster and more secure path to expansion

Ames Construction serves clients such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and various state transportation departments, which have stringent cloud and CMMC requirements. By adopting Lumen solutions, Ames can meet these demands while remaining flexible.

“Security of information resources is a top priority,” Bruckner said. “Our aim is to make sure that our customers are confident that we handle their data in a secured environment while also building a reputation as a solid technology-forward company that can support new projects in the future.”

As Ames continues to expand—the company recently opened an office on the east coast—Lumen will help them drive new revenue streams through Path to Cloud and CMMC certification. This support will enable Ames to achieve operational efficiency and keep clients satisfied while quickly expanding into new markets.

Quote from Bob Bruckner, Chief Information Officer at Ames Construction: Whenever we sign a contract, it’s all systems go. For Ames to be able to rely on Lumen to get service at any location, at any time, and do it quickly is critical to keeping our reputation as a solid construction company and completing our projects in a timely manner.
