AI House And Lumen: Powering Seattle’s Next Wave Of AI Innovation

Seattle’s reputation as a tech powerhouse is built on more than its skyline—it’s defined by the people and organizations driving innovation every day. At the heart of this movement is AI House, a collaborative space where founders, technologists and visionaries come together to build the future of artificial intelligence (AI), and AI2 Incubator, its primary corporate resident that makes it all happen.

A Launchpad for Founders and Ideas

Much more than just a workspace, AI House is a launchpad for early-stage AI startups. As Events & Community Manager Audrey Yun shares, “The physical space offers a unique opportunity for founders to connect and bounce ideas off each other. You might meet someone a step ahead or behind you, and that’s where the magic happens.”

AI2 Incubator was designed to guide founders from the earliest stages—sometimes even before an idea has fully formed—through technology development, product creation and ultimately building a business with real customers. “We provide mentorship, technical support and funding, but most importantly, we foster a culture of collaboration and high conviction,” says Managing Director Yifan Zhang.

A Demanding Data-Driven Environment That Requires Flexible Solutions

At AI2 Incubator, the energy is palpable. The organization, which initially spun out of The Allen Institute, is helping nurture ideas that could change the world. Its mission is clear: give founders the mentorship, resources and infrastructure they need to turn bold concepts into thriving companies. But behind the scenes, that mission comes with challenges that are as dynamic as the startups themselves.

Nothing about AI House is static. The number of startups and team members shifts constantly as companies scale, graduate or move on. One day, the space might hum with engineers training massive AI models and moving terabytes of data. The next, it could be packed with hundreds of participants for a hackathon or workshop. This unpredictability made traditional fixed-bandwidth solutions a nonstarter. Overprovisioning meant wasted dollars while underprovisioning risked grinding innovation to a halt.

Then came the rise of hybrid work. Remote collaboration, livestreamed events and distributed teams became the norm, adding new layers of complexity. AI House needed connectivity that was fast, reliable and secure—not just for those in the building, but for founders dialing in from across the globe. And with startups tackling sensitive sectors like healthcare and finance, the stakes were even higher. Enterprise-grade security, DDoS protection and airtight network segmentation weren’t optional. They were mission critical.

Perhaps the biggest challenge of all? Speed. AI House moves fast. New startups arrive, existing teams expand and others graduate—all on tight timelines. Network services had to keep pace, scaling up or down in days, not weeks. And because every dollar spent on infrastructure is a dollar not invested in founders, cost efficiency was just as important as performance.

Infrastructure That Enables Innovation

Behind every breakthrough is a foundation of reliable infrastructure.

With the Lumen® Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) platform, AI2 Incubator gained the ability to dynamically scale bandwidth on demand—critical for hosting hackathons, onboarding new startups and supporting AI model training without delays or costly overprovisioning.

NaaS also allowed the team to adjust network capacity in real time through a self-service portal, eliminating the need for lengthy provisioning cycles and enabling faster go-to-market for their founders’ products.

By combining NaaS with edge capabilities, AI2 Incubator helped ensure low latency and high performance for compute-intensive workloads, giving founders confidence that connectivity would never be a bottleneck, all while displaying the importance of Lumen edge cloud infrastructure.

Quote from former AI2 Incubator Director of Technical Operations Ingmar Ellenberger: Lumen network solutions have enabled seamless transitions to remote work, supported data-heavy AI research and allowed us to scale as our needs evolve. Flexibility and reliability aren’t just technical requirements. They’re strategic assets.

Transforming Industries One Startup at a Time

The impact of AI House and AI2 Incubator extends far beyond their walls. Startups nurtured here are tackling real-world problems in mortgage underwriting, immigration, healthcare, compliance and more. “We focus on the application layer of AI, where technology becomes truly useful for end users,” says Zhang. “That’s where transformation happens.”

Fast, flexible networking has transformed how AI House operates. Provisioning that once took weeks now happens in days, meaning new startups can hit the ground running in under two weeks. Events are no longer limited by infrastructure. In fact, over the past six months, AI2 Incubator has hosted more than 80 gatherings and welcomed 15,000 visitors, all powered by the dependable, high-performance Lumen Network.

More importantly, with the support of Lumen, AI House and AI2 Incubator have:

  • Enabled seamless remote and hybrid work for over 200 employees and founders
  • Supported rapid scaling for events, hackathons and daily operations
  • Fostered a collaborative culture that accelerates innovation and learning
  • Delivered reliable, flexible connectivity that empowers startups to focus on building and growing
  • Reduced provisioning time from weeks to minutes, cutting operational overhead and accelerating innovation cycles
  • Achieved cost efficiency by paying only for the bandwidth they need, when they need it, freeing resources for product development and founder support

What’s Next for AI2 Incubator?

Big things are on the horizon. AI2 Incubator is growing its coworking space and event capacity to welcome hundreds of new startups and host even larger, more tech-heavy gatherings. The next chapter includes deeper integration of Lumen® Edge Cloud Solutions and automated networking to keep pace with this expansion.

Strategically, the incubator is doubling down on AI innovation by supporting startups building industry-specific solutions, streamlining operations with AI-driven automation and fueling adoption through hands-on workshops.

As hybrid work becomes the norm, AI House is committed to infrastructure that makes collaboration effortless whether teams are on-site or remote. Secure, programmable Lumen connectivity will remain the backbone of this vision, helping Seattle cement its role as a global hub for AI talent, partnerships and next-generation companies.
